I'm in a bad mood. It isn't any one thing, just several annoying small or mid-size things. It can usually be cathartic to write about what's bugging me, but that's not going to do it in this particular case. In fact, if it weren't for this little pact I made with myself to do NaBloPoMo, I probably wouldn't bother at all today. I think instead of sitting here and feeling sorry for myself, I should try to work on knocking out a couple of those small annoyances. Anyway, this too shall pass.

Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars.

I had wondered, while filling out a friending meme, if Glee was succeeding in usurping Doctor Who's current place in my fandom affections. Measuring today's excitement and anticipation against that of Wednesday, I have to say the answer is no.

Defying Gravity was pretty great though. Just saying.

So far this year I’ve been doing more re-reading than new stuff. Along with three of the Harry Potter books, I’ve “A” through “N” in Sue Grafton’s alphabet series. (I need to read a few more before “U” comes out in December.) Here is the new stuff so far this year and a few thoughts on each.

• Death’s Half Acre – Margaret Maron – Deb Knott series – the area’s development brings about a clash between the area’s old way of life and new arrivals
• Lie Down with the Devil – Linda Barnes – Carlotta Carlyle series – the heroine finally dumps her loser boyfriend (and oh yeah someone gets killed, etc)
• The Mercedes Coffin – Faye Kellerman – Peter Decker series – I like the characters, but the series seems to be running out of steam
• Borderline – Nevada Barr – Anna Pigeon series – can’t say why without spoiling, but the story had an interesting similarity to a news story that was unfolding when I read it
• Confessions of a She-Fan: The Course of True Love with the New York Yankees – Jane Heller – chronicles the 2007 from a non-sports-writer perspective – a fun read
• What the Dickens: The Story of a Rogue Tooth Fairy – Gregory Maguire – from the author of Wicked – I liked it but did not love it
• Charm City – Laura Lippman – Tess Monaghan series – the story has the requisite twists and turns, but the best part is how well the author captures Bawlmer

Currently I’m reading Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals, which is about Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and particularly about the former political rivals he selected for his Cabinet. I am well over 100 pages in and have hardly made a dent, but it’s quite readable in spite of (or maybe because of) its thoroughness.

For several months off and on I’ve also been reading The Children of Hurin by Christopher Tolkien. It is set in Middle Earth well before the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it’s more a stand-alone story than a prequel. The reason I am taking so long to read it is that it’s unrelentingly depressing. With each passing chapter the situation gets progressively bleaker, and you just know it’s not going to end well.

I often have several books in progress at the same time, and such is the case now. I’m also working on two different books about the history of Latin America, and tomorrow I’m going to stop by the library for another load of mysteries. Last but not least, my boss loaned me a copy of Lavinia by Ursula LeGuin (it turns out he is friends with her), and it’s waiting in my cabinet at work for the next time I ride the subway home.

Can I just add that mousedrawing makes me cry like a little girl.

A while back one of my friends posted a movie meme I was going to swipe but never got around to doing.

1. List 10 movies that you're (almost) too embarrassed to love (and would never admit to having watched multiple times).

2. Include a still from the movie and an explanation as to why you like it.

3. Tag people (or not).

I’ve had a strange day and don’t know what else to write, so I’ll just do one of these. The movie is Pathfinder, and it happens to be playing on FX right now. It’s cheesy as hell, but with this screencap, do I really need to explain why I like it?

I've always wanted to be an empath. I think it has to do with the wanting what you don't have. I've always been good with information and objects, but people are often beyond me. Being able to sense and influence people's emotions (hopefully in a helpful way) always seemed a great way to go.

I don't even know what else could go wrong with work this week. Last night I spent at the airport in Alexandria, Louisiana trying to get the rental car whose battery died exchanged for one that worked. That only took two hours. Today, the other crew got locked in a property by the land owner and I had to go rescue them. Monday, it was the ferry that only ran twice a day. Wednesday was when we found out that our hotel only had internet in the lobby or the four rooms that asked for the modems they keep behind the front desk first. Really, I'm typing this sitting right outside the lobby -- and it is rather chilly.

Leaving for NZ in a few hours *SQUEE* though at the moment all I have is the icky feeling in my stomach I get every time I fly because I hate it. I've done it so much recently I'm usually okay with it once I'm ON the plane, it's just the lead up to it that makes me feel ill.

BUT at the end of it there will be lovely people and THEN a terrifying, soul-quaking interview, and then more lovely people. So worth it.

Here goes nothing.

I am in the midst of a couple days off, and I’m not entirely sure what to do with myself. We are dealing with the remnants of a tropical storm, so it’s been raining steadily for the past couple days. I see puddles where there usually aren’t, so I can only imagine the usual places are even worse. Not much enticement to go out and do something fun! On the other hand … I have a couple little work things I need to do, and there is always something that needs to be done on the domestic front, but I don’t really want to fritter away chunks of time in mundane activity either. I know: there’s no satisfying me! One thing I do know is that I could use some lunch pretty soon.

Ouch! I tend to listen to CDs over and over again, but to choose only ONE for the rest of my life? I don’t think so. Some of the ones in the heavier rotation are: Born to Run, Absolution, Trisha Yearwood’s Songbook, and the Return of the King soundtrack. I have all of those in my car, along with several others, and I also like to throw in an outlier from time to time. Inside I have many more CDs as well. Really, I can’t imagine listening to only one CD for the rest of my life. It would make storage much easier, though!

Tomorrow is a holiday. Thursday and Friday I am taking leave days, because I can and because I need them. I was hoping that these first two days of the week would be a little chance to catch my breath and get a few little nagging tasks done, but no. I forgot about some lame but mandatory operational testing on a new computer system thing that has been forced on us. Oh well. It’s always something! I’ve puttered around here on the comp too much to have time for a shower, so my co-workers will just have to put up with me this way today!

Over the weekend I added three more country artists to my concert list, which is the “treat” I had planned for myself that I mentioned. While I will save my actual “review” of the show for last.fm, it got me to thinking about some of the acts I have seen over the past few years and those I would like to see again or even for the first time.

If my memory serves, the first non-classical concert I ever attended (aside from no-name bands playing at my high school and the like) was a country act. It was Roy Clark at the Oklahoma State Fair, and I ended up having to quit my crappy waitress job so I could go with my family as planned. Well, that restaurant isn’t even there anymore, so I think I made the better choice. But I digress. Otherwise, it’s been more recent experience and more current artists.

These are the ones I’ve seen and would see again.

  • Trace Adkins – the freaking Angel of Death!
  • Little Big Town – great harmonies and camaraderie
  • Martina McBride – so tiny but such a big voice
  • Montgomery Gentry – liked them even more than I expected to
  • Keith Urban – yummy!
  • Phil Vassar – I expected to be impressed and I was
  • Lee Ann Womack – another powerful voice

These are the ones I’ve seen and don’t care one way or the other.

  • Rodney Atkins – seems likeable enough but nothing special to me
  • Alan Jackson – sue me! I was disappointed
  • James Otto – also nothing exceptional there

These are the ones I want to see. (There are more I would not turn down an opportunity to see, but these are the ones that merit particular effort.)

  • Garth Brooks – THE MAN
  • Neko Case – gotta throw in some of the alt
  • Locash Cowboys – I know someone who’s connected with them
  • Brad Paisley – hilarious novelty songs and sweet songs that will make you bawl
  • Rascal Flatts – Gary’s voice is sweet as honey
  • Trisha Yearwood – with or without her hubby

Okay, now myspouse can come home any time, so we can go eat dinner and watch football. I'm taking along a big fat book too!

Consider the following recommended, yeah.

# "Lights & Music" :: Cut Copy
Instant endorphin shot. This band makes me feel bright and impossibly joyful. In Ghost Colours remains a perfect album.

# "Novacane" :: Beck
From another perfect album, a classic. It makes me almost want to own a giant truck!

# "Serpentine" :: Peaches
Bloody hell it's PEACHES, what more could you possibly need to know?

# "Supernova Kiss" :: Nullsleep
Approaching desperation here. The coffee's run out and all the words are melting off the screen.

# "The Ballad of Sexor" :: Tiga
This song is hilarious.

# "Sodium Sonet" :: Trash80
Let's end with another happy-injection? Fuck. Actually, this is ideal music to put on a loop and draw to...

Do you look forward to returning to work/school on Mondays or do you live for the weekend? What do you enjoy most about weekends? What do you dread most about school and/or work?

View 815 Answers

You’re kidding, right? I pretty much live for the weekend, so I can sleep and chill and do stuff around the house and maybe do some fun things. That Sunday afternoon/evening dread of Monday morning is a deeply ingrained habit for me. This week it’s tempered – but only to a point – by a fun weekend and the expectation of a short week. We got through our exceptionally busy time, but things will still be pretty hectic for the foreseeable future. For the most part, I do like my co-workers, so I look forward to seeing them again and hearing about their weekends.

I finally, finally managed to download and watch 5.08. It's going to be a really busy MONTH for me so I really should not be doing this, but c'mon. This is Supernatural. The flesh is weak, and the spirit is only too willing to gets its fix when it can.

Just a few observations for now.

Yes, so my 'just a few observations' post turned out to be a monster. Sue me, why don't you.

This is pilfered from my facebook status. If there is any statistical inaccuracy, I assure you it’s on the low and not the high end. Any wonder why I’m exhausted? (It’s okay, though, I have a treat for myself tonight.)

In the last two months, my office gave to me: 12 schedule changes, 11 cranky emails, 10 copier jams, 9 interpreters, 8 boring meetings, 7 country cables, 6 slideshow revisions, 5 seminar days, 4 resident courses, 3 "down-range" events, 2 conferences, and a new Dean in a pear tree.

I’ve seen stories on Animal Planet about dog-friendly workplaces. They’re not just pet-focused businesses but a variety of organizations. For years I have wished I could take my cat to work. My office-mate even said something to that effect out of the blue a few weeks ago. I do miss her when I leave, and it would be quite stress-relieving to pick her up and snuggle her when the day starts getting to me. Well, I guess there is a little issue with getting the princess there and what to do with her that 25% of the time she’s not napping, plus the hyper-allergic co-worker that seems to exist in just about every office. Still, I would love to have her company. Especially lately, it’s been particularly hectic, and now I need to get ready and goooooo.
